I had the opportunity to shoot product shots over the weekend for NoviStretch performance covers, based out of Nashville, TN.¬† First off, I don’t know where to begin. As a kid, I was always into muscle cars, I had subscriptions to Motor Trend and other car mags and drooled over how awesome they looked and what it’d be like to drive them. So when the opportunity came to shoot some new muscle cars with the product on them, I was super excited to do it.

We used Fiddlers Groove at the Wilson county fairgrounds as our backdrop. It was a sunny, clear day, which made it a bit harder to shoot under harsh light but I think we pulled it off. We found one little area that was a vintage oil and gas station with old gas pumps and the whole thing, it was great and made for the perfect muscle car scenery. We also found another shaded area that had a wooden log wall. This is where things got interesting. Shooting in the sun you don’t have much control over anything. It’s like the sun is your main source of harsh, unforgiving, continuous flash. Under shade is where you can control everything. So I took out some flashes and placed them where I wanted, and click, click, boom.

I knew I captured something cool. It wasn’t until I got home and put them on the computer and edited a few that it really hit me. I captured something, in my opinion, that was worthy of a killer car ad or could go in one of those car magazines that I used to look at years ago. Not to toot my own horn (pun), but these images really got me excited. To know that I concept the scene and executed a shot that blew away the client is something I always aspire to do, but when you shoot that image that blows you away and gets you excited to do more and know that this is the path that you can excel in, is inspiring and pushes me more to pursue the kind of photography that I like doing and when that happens it shows in the photos!

It’s taken me a while, but I think I’ve found the direction I truly want to grow and excel in. I’ve photographed a wide variety, and some you just go through the motions and some you do for the money and some you do just to try, but until you hook on and really find what excites you and doesn’t make this “just a job”, it will show in your work and push you to better yourself.
